Adobe XD: A Comprehensive Design Tool

Topics: ,

Adobe XD is a modern tool developed by Adobe for creating designs and prototypes of user interfaces (UI) and user experiences (UX). It has become one of the most popular tools among designers thanks to its simplicity, speed and robust features.

Adobe XD (= Adobe Experience Design) is software for designers focused on creating websites, mobile applications and other digital products. It offers a complete set of tools for designing, prototyping and sharing interactive user interfaces. Designers can easily create wireframes, visual designs and interactive prototypes, and test their ideas.

Pros of Adobe XD

  • Intuitive user interface: Even beginners learn it easily.
  • Speed and performance: Optimised for high performance and smooth editing.
  • Integration with Adobe Creative Cloud: Easy import and export of work with other Adobe tools.
  • Prototyping and animation: Advanced options including animations and interactive transitions.

Cons

  • Limited plugin support: A smaller selection compared with the competition.
  • Real-time collaboration: Less robust than in some competitors.
  • Price: Part of Adobe Creative Cloud, which means a monthly subscription.

Recommendation

Adobe XD is a great tool for designers of all levels looking for a comprehensive solution for creating and prototyping user interfaces. Its strength lies in ease of use, speed and integration with other Adobe products. For teams who prefer a one-off purchase to a subscription, it may be worth considering Sketch. For teams that emphasise real-time collaboration, Figma may be the better choice.

We use Adobe XD too, where we keep our corporate graphics. Many of the graphic materials we have on our website and social networks were created in this very tool (e.g. the thumbnail for this article ☝️). Its ease of use lets even laymen find their way around the tool quickly and start using it straight away. For small companies like Archetix, however, there is no need for such a robust tool for everyday graphic edits. In this case we prefer to use Canva, which is entirely sufficient for creating graphic materials and offers thousands of templates and elements.
