What Is a VPN?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a technology that creates a secure and encrypted connection between your device and the internet. It works by redirecting your internet traffic through a secure server, which hides your real IP address and encrypts the data you send and receive online.
What Is a VPN Used For?
1. Privacy protection:
A VPN protects your personal data and privacy by hiding your IP address and encrypting all communication between your device and the internet.
2. Security on public networks:
When you connect to public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in cafés, trains or airports, your data can be vulnerable to attacks. A VPN encrypts your communication, which significantly increases security.
3. Access to restricted content:
A VPN allows access to websites and services that may be geographically restricted, such as certain streaming services or social media.
4. Online anonymity:
A VPN hides your real identity online, which can be useful for protecting your privacy and when carrying out sensitive tasks on the internet.
Advantages
- Increased security: The tool encrypts all of your internet traffic, which protects your data from hackers and snoopers.
- Privacy protection: It hides your IP address and thus protects your identity and location.
- Access to global content: It lets you get around geographical restrictions and censorship.
- Security on public Wi-Fi: It protects your data when you connect to unsecured public networks.
Disadvantages
- Connection speed: Using the tool can slow down your internet connection, because the data has to be redirected and encrypted.
- Setup complexity: Some tools may require a certain level of technical knowledge to set up and manage.
- Cost: High-quality VPN services are usually not free and can be expensive.
- Potentially untrustworthy provider: Choosing the wrong provider can lead to data leaks or misuse of your information.
Technical Knowledge Needed to Use a VPN
Using a VPN does not require advanced technical knowledge. Most modern tools offer user-friendly apps for various operating systems and devices. The installation and configuration process is often very simple and involves just a few steps:
- Download and install the app: Download the VPN provider’s app and install it on your device.
- Registration and login: Register and log in to the app with your user account.
- Choose a server: Choose the server you want to connect to according to your needs (e.g. geographical location).
- Connect: Click the connect button and the app takes care of the rest.

If, however, you just want to see a different selection of films on Netflix, one of the free versions will be enough.
