Crash Reporting for Mobile Apps in Smartlook

Topics: , ,

Smartlook has come up with another great new feature that puts it on a par with the big competitors and with environments for developing and measuring mobile apps such as Google Firebase (specifically the Crashlytics or Error Reporting module), Sentry, Raycast or Bugsnag. From the new year Smartlook is launching a feature that lets Smartlook users, thanks to the combination of crash reporting and visual recording, detect the reasons behind mobile app crashes more easily and so fix the faulty code more easily.

It is common practice that developers have to laboriously search for the cause of an app crash. The new feature puts an end to that. Crash reporting uses the error output (stack trace) to easily pinpoint where the problem originated. At the same time it makes available the recordings of users, which capture the situations leading up to the crash. The developer will therefore have documented what and when the app user wanted to click and what caused the crash. In this way developers save dozens of hours of work a month and a lot of comments in collaboration tools such as "how do I replicate this" or "send a screenshot".

Proper error debugging is not only about the user experience of your customers, it can have a major impact on your business. If an app crashes often, it can happen that the App Store or Google Play removes it from their platforms. Using crash reporting is therefore also one way to avoid this.

At the same time Smartlook changes the way you look at users, as only their behaviour is analysed. Smartlook also fully respects users' privacy, and the so-called wireframe mode prevents the use of sensitive data. Wireframe mode works by sending, for elements that could contain sensitive information, only their outline and position in the app and not their content. It is a way to provide maximum protection for the app's users and to preserve their anonymity. Because the feature collects only the data that is strictly necessary, it will not slow down the analysed app.
